The Independent Women's Organization (IWO) is a volunteer-based organization that supports Democratic candidates who are allies in the struggle for women's equality. IWO advocates at the local and state level for issues that affect Louisiana women and their families. Membership is open to all women who support the Democratic agenda.

The founders of IWO were women of action. In its first decade of existence, members registered over 4,000 new voters, provided canvassing for their candidates, and worked to end intimidation tactics at the polls.
IWO became an official organization in 1946, hoping to exert a consistent positive influence on city politics and we continue that legacy today!
Membership is due annually and is up for renewal January of each year.
Requirements for membership:
Payment of annual dues of $35
You must support the Democratic Party agenda and identify as a woman.
Please note our bylaws regarding voting on endorsements: The organization may endorse candidates or issues by a 60% vote of the members in good standing present at a general meeting. Voting members are new members who joined IWO
at least 3 months prior to the endorsement meeting and renewing members who paid this year’s dues at least one month prior to the meeting.
